What kind of wire mesh and plastic material do you use to keep gophers and weeds from ruining landscaping?

we are just about to landscape our front and backyard. we're going to do the whole thing ourselves. i've been told that you should start by installing wire mesh and black plastic about a foot down in the dirt so no gophers or weeds will ruin what you plant. is there information online on how exactly to install this?
