New clutch installed why is the shifter stuck?

i have a 2001 camaro 3.8l i removed the shifter and dropped the transmission took out the old clutch installed the new one. bolted everything back up and put the shifter back on. clutch engages and disengages fine but the shifter is stuck and wont move at all. what could be the problem?
