My DS disconnects when laptop is on?

This is a big issue. You see, I like to trade with my buddies all over the world for Pokemon. I can never connect to WFC whenever I want because my DS connects through my dads laptop. When the laptop is on, it disconnects all the time! I like to battle across the world and want to reduce the disconnection. Is there a way I can stop this, or slow it down? Please answer, I will choose best for some easy points-which ever one works best.
