Leprosy In 1550 To 1560?

We need information on leprosy in the mid 1500's for our school project. We are writing a story on a frenchman during the incursions who encounters Leprosy and dosn't know anything about it. We need to know mostly about how they treated lepers during this time period, and living conditions, how brazillians lived.
